16th Lancers
This badge belongs to a friend who has asked me to put it on the Forum to see if anyone can positively identify it. We have looked through photo, prints and pictures of the 16th Lancers but cannot find any evidence where and when it was worn. Any help very much appreciated. Jimbo

It might be a valise badge..... it was a leather role at the back of the saddle. some regiments had a badge at each end .... one for regiment and one for troop ID at the other end so they could be stored and recognised.

An idea of scale and a reverse picture may help to get an answer.

I cant see any connection with the badge to the 16th lancers.
Am I missing something? Whats the scrolled capital C in the middle? regards

Its Queen Charlotte's cipher (hence "the Queen's")... in 1766 the Regiment was for the first time designated as a Royal regiment being styled 16th The Queen's Light Dragoons; adopting Queen Charlotte's cipher.

The C cypher was used in the collar badges of both the 16th/5th Lancers and the Queens Royal Lancers and today the Royal Lancers pouch badge has an enlarged 16th/5th Lancers collar badge, so the C cypher is still in use today.
A rear view of the badge would help to determine what its use was. Regards Phil. |

I’m sure this sold recently at DNW. It’s a 16th (Charlottes) Hussars officers Badge. I can’t recall if it was worn on either a Silver Sabretache, or a silver pouch.
