I have a 1950's /60's WRAC beret which has a St. Eds. Crown bimetal badge fitted.
(At least one WRAC was wearing the St. Eds bimetal badge on beret with green backing around 1974, I gave her the badge). |

Very cool leigh!!! Can you share a picture as I would love to see it. Didn't they wear a rifle green beret, so interested to see what color backing you are referring to.

I'll dig out the beret I have, it's the rifle green beret with beach brown tear drop backing.

Chaps for interests sake, attached my example beret and a backing packaging bearing the ident NSN to Tim's pattern card. I would date this as roughly mid 1980's by the label and type face..
Also what I believe is an earlier incarnation of the teardrop backing. It came with the anodised cap badge which is a Gaunt London marked example - so correct for pre 1980 at least. Very interesting thread gents. Regards all Bess |

Have I missed, something? Didn't the ATS wear something similar albeit a bit more complicated, so I just presumed the WRAC continued the practice.

Bess, love your pictures a lot!!! Some excellent examples! Thanks for sharing!!!
It is my understanding that the ATS wore their badge and this tricolor backing toward the end of the war. I am very proud of the one in my collection, although they don't seem to be super rare as I've seen several available, and all about the same price. Terry |

Can any member post pictures of an early 1950s to 1970s WRAC green beret with beech brown tear drop cap badge backing?
Tim

A beret that looks very similar to the one above, same manufacturer, construction etc, unfortunately the date marking is obscured by the name label.

Leigh,
Excellent. They both look like a slider pocket was stitched in at the same time the beech brown backing was sewn to the beret "as issued". Does that support my theory in post 13 above? Tim

Leigh, interesting that out of 3 different WRAC berets, they all have a name label sewn in. Must have been standard procedure - not something generally seen in other regiments or Corps.
The backing that I have that I suspect may have been an earlier version certainly doesnt look anything like those on your earlier beret. So not sure what it is. It's a bit shabby and looks more cherry red like the RAMC backing really, but it came with the badge and is in a teardrop shape. Indentations shows that the badge has clearly been attached to it for some time and it has stitching where it has been removed ( presumably) from a beret. Who knows. All the very best chaps Bess |

It looks as if it's from the same litter as the two I show. The badge backing in packet - a thread on the HMVF site tentatively dates the "SL33" mark to around 1989-95 |

We need a look at some more recently manufactured berets than the ones we've shown. |

Two titbits to add to the conversation.
List of Changes dated 31st January 1954 introduces as Change 5741 Berets, Green, WRAC and Grey, QARANC, 1953 pattern – now knitted. Fitted with regimental badge backing. The photo shows an earlier beret. Jon |
