They look like the current issue officer's and OR's capbadges as sold by the RCD Kitshop.

Yep, but they appear to be struck from the older dies, not the ones used in the 70-80-90's that had the more angular look.

Bill, Phil, et all,

What's the story behind the RCD badges, & the tail position? I've heard some at shows talk about 'A' Squadron because the tail is straight, 'B' Because it's curved down etc.

Do you guys have any ideas? Or is it just 'old wives tails'.

Jaime

Yes, the cap badges look like modern day versions avail thru the kitshop or QM. Yes, back in "The Germany Days" the tail was manipulated to note the squadron a soldier was in. Imagine being posted to a different squadron each year, or even during the run of a year and the constant bending of the Sprinkboks tail, it will eventually break off. Now the RSM, SSM and Sr NCOs are on to the soldiers to replace their cap badge (because the tail is gone and being a part of the badge) and the process begins again. Over time the system goes thru alot of badges and can't keep up. Therefore, this practice was discontinued, while the regiment was still in Germany before repatriating back to Canada and CFB Petawawa.

Ouch. Poor springbok.
Interesting information.
I wonder if the regiment took one of the older cap badges as a model for the new issue badges, or if the old dies were still around?
