Smile Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteers

Hi all,

I bought this badge as a Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteers glengarry badge. It is WM lugged east-west and with Victorian crown, 45x40mm. The 1st & 2nd Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteer Corps became the 1st & 2nd Volunteer Battalions Lincolnshire Regiment in May 1883. I have a photocopy of a 2nd Admin Battalion Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteer Corps helmet plate worn 1880-1883 with a hunting horn without the crown similar to mine.

Anyone with any info on these I would appreciate any further info, regards Dean.

Dean,

These are generic Rifle Volunteers badges and without specific provenance could be to any of a number of Rifle Volunteer Corps.

A lot of dealers like to attribute those similar badges with numbers inside the horn to the more popular ( and therefore more expensive ) County`s. No prizes for guessing why.

Peter

I hope you are aware of the fact that the 1st and 2nd Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteers that became the 1st and 2nd VBs, The Lincolnshire Regiment, were only in existence since the consolidation and renumbering of 1880.

The RVCs that consolidated were the 1st - 9th, 11th -13th and 17th - 20th. Earlier there existed also the 14th - 16th. Thus, depending in the age of the badge, it could also be to one of those (if it is Lincolnshire at all because, as Peter already explained, it is very generic).

I doubt this. After the 1880 consolidation, there were no Administrative Battalions of Rifle Volunteers any more. That is what the consolidation did: merging the individual RVCs of an Admin Bn into a new, large RVC.

Thanks Peter and Henk,

Appreciate it is a generic RVC badge. Good to read some of the details of their forebear units. I am looking for photographic proof of the RVCs wearing this badge albeit generic, with the centre piece of the helmet plate as my only guide thus far, cheers Dean.
