Royal Fusiliers Vols.
Ebay pickup. (apologies to other members bidding)
would this be a volunteers badge? (whitemetal) height is about 99mm, or it will be when I straighten out the tip of the top flame which is bent back over. and does anyone have an issue number for the Royal Fusiliers badges that were done in detail in the Military Historical Society's Bulletin? (I'm sure I have the issue in question but cannot find it)

I was thinking about a 'degreaser' only, not metal polish, but if it makes a mess of it you can't reverse the process of course, so I'll give it some thought.
I am going to have a go at that flame tip though. The last Victorian lugs like this I straightened were rock hard, so you really have to take your time.

It looks like verdigris. Tricky that because the 'standard' lemon juice on a small (tiny) cut down cotton bud is probably going to remove the patina (on the front, I would try it on the rear first). You might want to go along to a old fashioned jeweller for another solution (no pun intended...). david Last edited by wright241; 25-03-10 at 11:50 AM. Reason: typo |

Yes the verdigris is a difficult one, sure to make a clean spot I don't want if I have a go at it.
I think I'll probably leave it a while as I'm a bit excited about this one, don't want to do anything in haste. It's made my day, been a while since I bought anything decent and 'untouched'.

Lovely badge although they do turn up firly regularly as Bosleys, maybe because more than one on the VB's wore them. To date I'm only aware of the 1st VB having their own intergal scroll at the base. |

Sounds like a nice item to my county regiment, looking forward to seeing it. Re: MHS; if I recall correctly someone 'went to town' on the RF's and wrote a series of well illustrated articles, I cannot remember what year though. I will have another look at them tonight. (I probably have a hundred issues loose and jumbled up).

'fraid not. Ought to be in the £80 range I'd have thought, maybe higher. Robbie (Leighbuzzly) always seemed to have one on sale a couple of years back.

Mike,
I have all the MHS Bulletins and cant find the article you are thinking about. There is a book "The First Londons" by R.E.Handley FRICS which covers some badges of the battalion and in fact an example of your badge appears on the dust jacket. P.B.

Hi PB, I must have been looking at the article on RF Forage cap badges, Volume 53 (No. 211) Feb 2003, thinking it covered fur cap as well. Mind playing tricks. But that is a well illustrated piece anyway 54 badges...very nice (by Douglas Twomey)
