Question 43rd Wessex?

I recently acquired what I think is a 43rd Wessex formation sign, it's one I have never seen before, thoughts appreciated . . !

These signs have puzzled collectors for many years.

Similar signs exist with blue tails and claws, blue claws, tail and wings, red claws and tongues, red claws, tongues and tails.

No explanation has ever been found and the usual suggestion is that it may have been used to indicate brigades although that would be more likely if a third colour other than red or blue had been used as the division had three brigades.

I would be interested in other thoughts on this.

I was told many years ago by a dealer that the dragons tongue sometimes appeared in red or blue to denote infantry and artillery, but that's the only time I've heard that explanation.

Usually when they are on that type of material they are a over-woven printed badge's but there is no evidence here.

As always they could just be private purchase for walking out.

I spoke to the person I bought this from and he said it was his Father's who served in the Middlesex Regt, presumably the 8th who were the MG section I believe, could it be this denoted Infantry MG?
