Default Plastic South Staffordshire Badge & Cdo Title

Hello Gents,

Just picked up these two badges recently and would like to request your opinion on these two pieces of insignia?

The South Staffordshire badge looks original to me but the addition of the 'Holland Patch' on cardboard is unusual.

I picked up the Cdo title and believe it's a modern repro?

Thanks for your help.

Paul

Paul,

The Staffords plastic looks real, but someone has painted it silver and gold and added the patch.

I would remove the patch and the paint if it was mine.
The title appears modern.

regards

I assume that someone wanted it to look like the "normal" bi metal or silver and gilt, which often have the Holland backing. Removing the paint might ruin it and I would leave it as it is, for that reason and also that it is part of its history. A genuine example for certain. no idea on the cloth patch.

I would not try to remove the paint.

G'day Gents,

Thanks for the prompt replies and advice.

I do like the hat badge and the paint job, I believe, adds to the history of the badge.

I would hate to think of the botched job I'd do if I tried to remove the paint so I'll leave it as is.

Thanks for your replies.

Paul

Default S Staffs

I've heard tell, but never seen evidence of plastic badges being officially repainted.

I do have versions for a couple of units that have been repainted as if they were officers'. I suspect that the difficulty of getting a replacement officers' quality badge whilst on active service must have led to the expediency of getting an Ordnance issue badge and doctoring it.

The same may well have happened with this S Staffs badge.

Stephen.

Has anyone actually seen a period picture showing the plastic South Staffordshire being worn? I know it is often impossible to identify one badge from another even on a good portrait.

Towards the end of the war some designs were issued painted by Stanley and Sons. I had an HLI badge that had been sprayed silver. This is cited in the Plastic badge article from which the production figures are sourced. I do not believe that the paint was anything other than a single colour finish so does not apply to this badge. Neither am I aware of any regimentally directed painting..

I like the South Staffs badge, it may very well have been made that way/enhanced by the origial owner but the Holland cloth is a modern addition it seems.

The No4 commando titles looks just fine.

I've seen a number of Parachute Regiment that have silver paint on them, sometimes very well worn looking too!

Hello Gents,

Thanks for the continuing discussion on the hat badge and also the PM'd comments on the title.

I'm obviously well pleased the title is a good one!

Thanks

Paul

Default S Staffs.

Billy,

Don't copy & paste your picture into the thread. Go to the 'paperclip' icon on the header above the text box when you reply. By clicking on the 'paperclip' you can open a link to 'Manage attachments', then 'browse', and then open the File Explorer and access any of your own saved photos. Once you have highlighted the file you with to download, upload it, close the window in the attachments box and voila, all done (maybe!)

Have fun. Stephen.
