H.G&S Maker Mark?
Hi all,
An aquisition from the Chelmsford Militaria Fair today, a very rushed pre-work visit which made me 1/2 hour late Anybody seen this mark before? Its on a 1916 economy RWF. It doesn't appear to be in the maker mark section. Cheers, Phil

That looks like a great new mark for the Makers Marks project for the forum.

From a Silver hallmark website:
"Henry Griffith & Sons The business, commenced in Birmingham by Henry Griffith in 1850, was continued as Henry Griffith & Sons (until 1898) and later as Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd" HG&S was their silver hallmark... Maybe them?? Cheers, Tim |

My guess is based on the excellent work done by 'Ticker' Riley here: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=15609 It fits the economy badges period. Henry Griffith & Sons is not on that list.

I am not certain if orders for these badges might have been placed separately by the Australian system or through the British contract system. Keith |

can you show the front please, as if there is a rose shaped device at 6 o'clock (?) with a central dot, then you've picked up a spurious item! And the mark is there for one purpose and one purpose only, and I suspect in this case it worked!! Sorry Andy |

Thanks all for your replies. Seems Andy may have just blown this one out of the water.

Hi Andy,
I thought the quality of this one was very good. I think I will stick with Police etc from now on, but even they are being faked.

as I thought, it is Fake sorry... so a "Fakers" Mark rather than a Maker or Retailer's Mark. Thanks for the reply and for reference the same strike can be found with a hairline die fault running through "ROYAL" Andy |

For members reference another to add to the HG&S hall of shame.
The mark, similar to the A.J. ALLEN fakes is finer, deeper and squarer font than most of the common fake/fantasy repro mark cohort discussed here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...light=Armfield Last edited by Luke H; 24-03-21 at 04:50 PM. |

Without that mark, at a glance, it would be quite convincing, just another 1916 RWF.
