Lightbulb Blackened plastic 6th Battalion DLI cap badge

Hi all,

I think the following is a blackened plastic 6th Battalion DLI cap badge. It has been painted black and there are overlaps of black to the rear of the normal silver grey plastic badge (K&K 2256). Sadly the blades are both missing.

I have not found too much on blackened plastic badges.

A new addition to my Durhams collection.

Regards Dean.

I have a RWF plastic that has been painted a dark brown colour and two plastic rank crowns that have been painted black.

Interesting thread Dean, here is a silver painted Air Ministry Constabulary cap badge I had which might be of interest.

Best

The plot thickens thanks Graham - can see the utility of painting badges.

6th Battalion Durham metal badges were often supplied in GM to be blackened by the battalion. Some were WM to be blackened.

All GM DLI sold as economy are not that at all ! They were not made in economy issue.

So this black painted plastic has me thinking 6th battalion like the blackened GM and WM versions. Would they have not made a black plastic one for a TF battalion or would the numbers not justify it. So they just painted a silver-grey plastic one.

Same rationale for other painted plastic badges I guess.

Someone will know and have the official view from the records.

Interesting huh, Dean.

Hi Dean

I had three of these Air Ministry Constabulary cap badges: two were ‘au natural’ with the third, illustrated, having been painted - presumably to match the WM pre-war issue. I never had, or have even seen, the plastic “AMC” shoulder titles, but I wonder if any of those have been painted? As I said, an interesting thread - hopefully others will air their views.

Glad to chip in if I can. I have assumed the RWF was darkened either to make it look more like an OSD or perhaps to make it less shiny and the crowns painted black for use by a Rifles member.
