Hmm, a real two edged sword that one. Most medals that are "on the loose" got there because the recipient or their family sold them. Medal forums have endless examples of medals that are returned to their families -often at a financial loss - only to reappear on the market almost immediately.

It is interesting that some people acquire medals and then go amazing lengths to try and return them to the descendants of the people of the people they were awarded to.

I have bought numerous medals from the families of the recipient ( and even some to the recipient themselves ). In some cases the families will be extremely pleased to have the opportunity to get the medals back but I suspect those families are in the minority.

Eddie, I fully understand what you are saying about medals "on the loose" and why they are, but I was just simply impressed by the sheer human decency of Zachariah Fike.

Totally agree with your comments Eddie, and l do think, if he is buying medals to return to families he should be very aware that for years people have been naming up blank Purple Hearts to significant casualties!

There is a chap in Canada who has made a political career out of this. By his actions he frequently forces the sale price of pretty mundane items out of all recognition - i.e. over Can$7,000 for a WW1 Victory medal. He is also a driving force behind efforts to make it illegal to sell any Canadian medal.

This is dangerous ground whatever the motivation of this particular individual.

I actually had to deal with Dave Thomson (the Canadian) once as he had won an auction i had running. He didn't pay for the medal and asked i coordinate with an organization interested in the medal directly. The organization always communicated with me in a very negative and harsh tone. I was treated as a petty thief by them. I tried to have Dave banned after such a negative experience but that went nowhere.

I feel Dave to be a publicity hound that has done nothing positive for the medal collecting hobby.

I think these people are just media whores. There is another fellow in Ontario who buys medals and then makes a big presentation of them to whatever organization he deems appropriate. I find it painful.
