There are a large number of command badges worn by Canadians, in particular, when they are posted to American and NATO positions. For example, NICS personnel have a NATO command badge even though they are posted within Canada.
I have a few that I will post later. Phil |

The badges are, left to right: Allied Command Transformation - Formerly Allied Command Atlantic or SACLANT. This badge is worn by NICS Personnel. NORAD NORAD 4th Allied Tactical Air Force, Ramstein Allied Command Europe Mobile Force - These were worn in Canada by units designated to ACE Mobile Force Standing Naval Force Atlantic - Canadian Ships are assigned to STANAVFORLANT on a rotating basis. The Norad badges were worn by Canadians in North Bay, Colorado Springs and just before the final closures, some of the Canadian Long Range Radar Stations. Please excuse the quality of my images. These are: 89 Canadian Logistics Unit - United Nations Transition Assistance Group Canadian Contingent - United Nations Transition Assistance Group NATO AWACS -Geilenkerken sp? The UNTAG badges were for the Canadians who went to Namibia in 1989. There were also badges for the RCMP members who went. I particularly like these badges as the two Supply Sergeants (both badge collectors!) who procured them had them manufactured in South Africa, in spite of the economic sanctions at the time! Phil |

Command Badge
Great!!!! Really nice to see some answer with such great images!!
Now to be picky Canadian Command Badges. Canadian Units within the Canadian DND structure. Not badges worn by Canadians while employed in the UN on NATO or other organizations. This still is a small subject (compared to Hat Badges) and maybe we can "nail" it with only a little difficulty. So--------- How many and what are the "Canadian" Command Badges??? How many and what are the "UN" pocket badges worn by Canadians??? How many and what are the "NATO" badges worn by Canadians? and finally - - What else is out there??? Thought I get a new "quest" going for the New Year happy New Year to all Larry

Back in the late 70s - early 80s the MCC of C published an article by a collector named Jim Buckland. It included great photos and identification of Canadian, NATO and UN pocket badges. I wil try and dig it up.
In the Canadian Forces, command badges are just that - Command Identifiers. As an example: my unit is The Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics, which belongs to the formation - Land Force Doctrine and Training System, which in turn belongs to Land Forces Command. CFSCE does not wear a unit identifier, but we do wear the LFC command badge. Perhaps a gallery of past and current CF command badges would be a useful reference. I can contribute if you like. I seem to recall that a large number of the UN pocket badges were available here in Canada. Phil Last edited by Phillip Herring; 01-01-10 at 04:06 PM. |

Command Badges
I think you may have to differentiate between 'Command' badges and the 'UN fob badges'. Even within the Command badges there are the Canadian badges which represent our domestic forces and then there are the badges from the higher formations of our Allies. All are exciting badges to collect as they are very colourful and they make into stunning collections - many, especially the foreign badges, are quite difficult to find.
These older images are of some of the insignia I have in my collection. |

Good project. Could be made into a new gallery / index. The existing format, where the index has a badge as a link that leads to images of the varieties of that badge would be the desired approach?
Some thought needs to be put into the organization. "Attached" versus a component of the CF is a definite distinction. Ed, I swear I have seen that first image somewhere before. |

I would suggest including Canadian and NATO/UN badges known to be worn by Canadians. In the cases of AMF and STANAVFORLANT, entire Canadian units/ships are/were attached to these formations making the Canadian-foreign distinction rather blurry.

In "Distinguishing Patches" the criteria used for 'foreign' patches was that it had to be worn by a Canadian unit and not just worn by individual Canadians. This criteria excluded all the various badges worn by officers attached to international HQ formations and those worn by officers on exchanges.

OMG what have I done???? I decided at the Ottawa show, that I needed a new collection to spend money on, as my primary collecting field has resulted in no new acquisitions. I picked up a couple of Command Badges, Mobile, Air, and Canadian Forces Europe.
