Default Information on a Gunner?

One of my local postmen has been delivering Jiffy bags packed with badges for years and has never asked what was in them! During polite conversation the fact that they contained Miltary Insignia arose and so the subject led to his Grandfather, who served with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War. The family know that he was a Light Anti Aircraft Gunner and trained at Chester in 1940 and served with the 1st Army in N.Africa, Sicily, Monte Casino and eventually Rome and have his service medals, however the rest remains a mystery!

Does any member have any further information which might be of use to the family?

The Serviceman’s details being Sgt Douglas Kenneth Barnes, RA.
Any info would be appreciated and passed on!

Andy

If the man had served in WW1 it might have been possible to find something on Ancestry, as it is I have done a number of searches on that site but have drawn blanks.

Andy,

The family can apply for a copy of his service records :-

https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-pers...ervice-records

They should through up details of postings etc, then there are numerous WW2 forums who could help - or perhaps even some of the online diaries (not sure if just WW1 at this point?)

Hope that helps.

Seem to recall there being a very good RA website, will see if I can find the link in my bookmarks.

I think it says they have his service medals not his records.

Guess a double-doh is in order then!... my apologies, just one of those days

I originally said that the family should definitely get hold of the chap's service records as they're a goldmine of information. As Andy C said, joining a forum is a good idea, if only to make sense of all the military jargon contained within the records; there will be a lot of abbreviations for instance, many of which are no longer in use.

Be prepared for a lengthy wait; IIRC it took me around 18 months before I received my Dad's records. They will need to send a copy of their relative's death certificate and provide a name, rank, service number and Unit.

The following link may prove helpful:-

The turn around is vastly improved these days. A few weeks is now the norm.

Hell Andy
the following may be of some use/interest.

1560396 Douglas Kenneth Barnes enlisted into the Royal Artillery (TA) in 1938, he was posted to 212 Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery 18/8/1940, to 63rd Light Anti Aircraft Regiment 27/10/1941 and transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps 18/1/1945.
