Very possibly although it's a tad on the large side and really lacks the quality usually associated with a sweetheart brooch. Thanks for the idea though.

I think you'll find its a 'sweetheart'/ lapel badge, and I think its a relatively modern one.

What are the dimensions out of interest? and what were you hoping it to be?

Size is 38mmx33mm, quite large for a sweetheart brooch, but well made with good definition.
As to what I would like it to be?? I'm not really sure yet but I am certain I have seen this configuration, castle over VDG, somewhere before. Could it have been a crest on regimental notepaper or a band musicstand banner?
I will try the Museum and let you know if I get any feedback.

This device was used on all manner of things (and still is), from regimental plaques to blazer badges, and I'm fairly sure is appears on the front of regimental journals. Does not appear to be available as a lapel badge anymore, but there are other items, just google RDG museum and view regimental shop.

I've seen the castle over VDG worn on a belt plate, but with the short lugs common to belt buckle badges.

Thank you for your reply, this may have been the answer I was looking for.
Tucked away in the deep and dark recesses of an old collector's mind was a distant memory that I had seen this somewhere before. Clearly what I have just bought is NOT a buckle badge sadly and I think Rob is much closer to the truth when he suggests it is something sold by the PRI or one of the museums.
Help with a photograph would be hugely helpful.

Yes indeed this motif appears from time to time, for example etched onto the fourth button of the service dress jacket ( 1959, Dress Distinctions of the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, Langridge Military Publications, Cambridge , U.K.)

and as pointed out above, on the belt buckle of #1 Dress (1992, Skilton, Wendy, British Military Band Uniforms, Midland Publishing. Lecicester, U.K. P 21)

Absolutely right! I had forgotten I have this book and have just looked it up.
To add to my confusion the badge on the brass back plate in Wendy's book is much larger than that in Tony's photograph but nevertheless another question answered.
