Un named 1896 India Medal
Evening all
If I could as[k you all for a bit of help. I recently came across a small lot of medals 1914-15 Star, 1914-1918 War Medal Both Named to J Beattie 16 Can INF as well as his service lapel pin. Also in the lot was an 1896 India Medal. The ribbon has seen better days. It is also unnamed. I am a neophyte when it comes to Victorian Medals. How common was it for medals of that era not to named? I don't have any other reason to question it's authenticity other than it not being named. Here is where it gets fun. After searching Pte Beattie's war record. He states on his attestation that he has served 12 years with the Royal Scot Fusiliers. Yet doesn't say when. In 1897 (the date of the two bars) he would have been 19 years old. Thanks Cam 21182139509_eca23bec5b_o.jpg 21377356681_06e2119f1e_o.jpg 21181185658_86bd1b0680_o.jpg |

According to the book, British Battles and Medals:
1. The medal should be named. 2 The Royal Scots Fusiliers were not entitled to either of those clasps. Phil

Thanks Phillip
So now it's clear the medal is not his. I understand that they should all have been marked. However sometimes things don't happen like they should. I also found what appears to be the maker's mark. Underneath Victoria's shoulder. Tommorow I will try and source the maker. |

Is there any possibility that the medal has been erased? Such things are not uncommon with Victorian medals.

In which case there's a slight possibility that black light may help.
I'd try that before tipping a bit of sulphuric acid on & heating it with a blow torch to raise the erased...... |

I should take a look at the roll for this particular campaign in WO100/87 if I were you.
