I believe that the torpedo as we understand it today, came into use in the Senior Service in about 1870 (I think).

I could be wrong as cloth is not my area but it looks like a grubby post 1950s badge to me, plus the machine stitching?

I don't think that the RN had a trade badge anything like that after 1953. I have shown a post '53 crown of similar size for comparison. I think you can clearly see the difference.

They had sewing machines in the Victorian era, they had torpedoes too. I believe early, crude, torpedoes were tried out, submarines too, in the early 1800s. This badge is very odd, though!

The crown is obviously a bit worn on the ebay example, its clearer on the buywize one.

In 1871, the British Admiralty paid Whitehead £15,000 for certain of his developments and production started at the Royal Laboratories in Woolwich the following year. In 1893, RN torpedo production was transferred to the Royal Gun Factory. The British later established a Torpedo Experimental Establishment at HMS Vernon and a production facility at the Royal Naval Torpedo Factory, Greenock in 1910. |

There is nothing wrong with this badge mates-- its 100% period.
I too wanted to lay my hands on it but was outbid. Its very very rare, somewhat surprised at the price realized but for this badge I think as expected - I was close. Seaman Gunner (Torpedo) 1st class -1885-1890 badge is shown below for future --- RCN Bryan |
