Default Royal Canadian Navy?

Hello everyone, I have an original cabinet photo measuring 4 inches by 6 1/4 inches of one of my wife's ancestor. The photo was taken in Montreal, Canada I presume at the turn of the century. I think, the Royal Canadian Navy did not exist at that time and I am quite sure he is French Canadian. The only information I have is on is cap tally, I can only see the last word which is "Squadron". Does anyone have any information.

Regards, Michel

I am not certain about that uniform but the Canadian Navy was given the 'Royal' around 1910 and had half a dozen ships on the coast during the First World War. It seems to me unlikely that a French Canadian would be in the USA navy, but who knows??

I checked a book by Jenson Tin Hats Oilskins and Seaboots and there is a early photo at the start of a sea cadet which is quite similar to your photo, minus the white cord. I think the white cord is part of dress code and would not be there in normal conditions. On page 20 of the book another photo of a sea cadet actually had the cord part.

This is a USN sailor Raymond --- the cap style, tunic cuffs, lanyard & the tied silk are the telltale signs. He likely had his photo taken in Montreal when his ship was visiting the city/St Lawrence.
