Hello Just, As far as I understand it from what I see at my local Armoury, when any young “Sprog” joins either of our local militia units, his (or her) beret badge is the “tri-service” badge. When they have finished and passed their basic training, they have a “Graduation Parade” where they are awarded their Regimental head-dress badge. The larger version of the badge as shown in the first post is the generic issued ceremonial belt buckle issued from stores. I understand that if a “Regimental” belt buckle is to be worn, it is procured from N.P.F. (Non Public Funds) which could be from a number of sources. For example, a Regimental association or a well endowed other friendly benefactor. In the regular forces I believe you do not receive your Regimental or Arm of Service hat badge untill you have finished your Trade training. A presently serving member or recent retiree of the Canadian Forces (and forum member) may be able to give a more up to date explanation. regards, D.J.
