Default Maltese Cross Button?

Could anyone identify this button please? Two piece construction, with cross attached by "prongs". Shank is stuck solid. From what i can make out the back reads I.I:I & Co. M London. Sorry cannot provide more info about maker but the back is quite polished! Hoping this fits in nicely with my collection!

Hello

Quite some while ago Denis Darmanin wrote and illustrated an article in "Button Lines", (the Journal of The British Button Society) about Maltese Military Buttons.

He showed a button very similar to yours - gold plated brass with a mounted silver knight's cross (or Maltese cross). His button was of French manufacture though, large size 22mm, small size 15mm. He tentatively identified it as a private purchase design for officers' mess dress jackets, believed to be for the King's Own Malta Regiment.

Hopefully someone can confirm that this is still the current view.

Regards
Roger

This type of button was/is also used by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The backmark would help. Are you sure it is not STILLWELL?

A well documented and illustrated reference released by George Cassar and Denis Darmanin named "Buttons Parade" published in 2019 about military and civilian buttons used in Malta between the 18th to the 21st century, confirms this button as being King's Own Malta Regiment mess vest button circa 1934. The image shows this button on a Makers' sample card.

My praise goes to both authors for such a well researched study. A highly recommended reference.
