Are you interested in the Guard's versions of embroidered badges? The GG were using embroidered on felt grenades by 1974/75, the design being slightly different in colouring to the NCOs sleeve grenades although the latter were used on the beret due to shortages.
The Chesires wore a round, embroidered felt badge, I think in the 80's, it was unpopular and later used as a tracksuit badge for those who passed a ski course (so I was told when I phoned their RHQ).
My notes re. the Cheshire's machine embroidered (in white, yellow, black and green thread) on circular dark blue cloth beret badge:

On 24th November 1985 I phoned The Cheshires
RHQ to enquire about this badge and was told that it was issued when the 1st Bn went to Germany in 1974 and was worn for a very short time, being very unpopular and discontinued by the CO.

It was then issued for wear on the track suit by personnel who'd passed a ski test.

At the time I made the enquiry (Nov. 1985) it was worn as a beret badge by cadets.

Leigh, thats really helpful and gives me a date for the 2 I have. I suspect the smaller - which has a more gold and silver like thread, is probably the 80's cadet example.

The version I enquired about is the one embroidered on dark blue felt which does'nt seem practical for aberet or track suit badge.
I'll dig it out and photo it.

A bit 'rustic' looking . . . shame the moth got ro it. I would imagine the 2 I have then are likely both cadet versions.

Thanks Leigh.
