Another discovery while examining the lugs under large magnification compounds my findings : )))) there is something special about Tiptaft lugs! I will double check more WW1 cap badges to see if this unusual construction is present in them!

I got one in the 70's from a reputable dealer in Melbourne who told me that mine is a good one,

In my opinion there should be a clear separation between the top of the trident and the ear, there should be only one point of contact between the decoration on the left as you look at it and the left knee and the circle on the inside of the leg should be voided. The "Devil" should be mostly vertical any badge that is "squeezed" is not genuine.

I hope that this helps.

Phil.
Phil what do you mean as squeezed??

I was told by Jack Langley (long time Australian militaria dealer) that Tip Taft in the UK made some for them (which makes sense as they had a squadron in France) and that others were made in Egypt (I have also seen rough sand cast 13ALH collars that were made in Egypt and are legit).

The fake ones tend to lack detail, especially around the eyes and have been reproduced heavily over the years. I was told that even a Victorian Motorcycle gang wore copies (though I don't know how true this is).

Hi Mick,
Just a correction: it was the 4th ALH who were divided between theatres. The 13 ALH was all on the Western Front.

Oops your right. Must have been thinking of the 4th LH.

The ones on UK ebay for GBP20 are all copies. Rubbish made and sold by unscrupulous sellers.

Authentic ones sell for around AUD$150-200 or more these days.

An easy enough slip to make, given that both units served as Corps Cavalry.
