Does anyone know what the Unit numbers mean on my grandfathers WWI war record?

Best I can come up with is RDg, RD may refer to Royal Dragoons.
Ill have a look through "Williamson2 later today, see if I can find out what the various abbreviations mean.

The original document seems to indicate RAF

RD - Recruiting/Recruitment Depot ?

Thomas Stewart # 169447 RAF, for some reason I thought he was with the Royal Scots then transfered to the RAF.

OK , here's a 'possible' guess !

RD- Recruitment Depot > STR - S/Training/R > 1 S of SF - No. 1 School of Special Flying (Gosport) originally named No.1 Training Squadron.

Well done - I've literally just sat down with the two volumes of Williamson to check through.....

I was thinking one of the entries might be re. a school but had no idea which.

Service number 169447 (I may be reading that wrong) is in the block of numbers allocated in May 1918 to civilian entries to the RAF.

His D.O.B was 1900 and his occupation was Miner , so that would fit.

Interesting last entry : Dispersal Centre Preston 20 - 1- 19.

So was he "demobbed" 6 month after his arrival at Training School without seeing any overseas service ?

Hi

There's a really great site that I came across run by one of the nicest guys I've met for many a year.

It's called something like "airhistory" and is a British site that lists just about ANYONE who even looked sideways at an aeroplane in WW1.

If you can't locate what you want, the site moderator usually answers your query very promptly.

I have an ID tag that had something like " No 1 C W" which turned out to be "No 1 Cadet Wing"

I heard he had served in the middle east in WWI .Maybe not.
In WWII Thomas Stewart was a Warrant Officer in RCAF and was awarded the Empire Medal for pulling someone out of a burning aircraft.
