74th Field Regiment R.A.
A printed 49th Division sign with the addition of 50th Division tradition lettering. Please correct me if need be, the lettering was added as a recognition to the units prior service with the 50th?
Have seen the fully embroidered versions of this sign before. However I do not recall having seen this combination of printed and hand embroidered. This being the first sign for this unit I have ever owned. Out of an old collection here in the U.S. Jack

Yes I have, but unfortunately it didn't migrate to my collection! To me this version tells more of a story than the tidier all-embroidered version. The example you illustrate is, in my opinion, superb. Mike

It was an emotional time - many members of 50 (Northumbrian) Inf Div had come all the way from the Western Desert to NW Europe and whilst 49 Inf Div was a very worthy formation, to many Geordies of the Tyne and Tees, joining a bunch of Yorkshiremen must have seemed something of a comedown. Perhaps there are parallels in the US Army of WW2 - maybe in theose Divisions with a very strong State allegiance?

Thank you Mike. The situation likely existed in some of the U.S. National Guard units called up in either WW1 or WW2. As the war progressed in the 1940’s many units started to be piecemealed out based on necessity.

I was told by members of the Regiment that the hand embroidered TTs on the printed formation badge is the only original ones worn. The letters being applied by wives and girl friends.

This example on an original battle dress has been in my collection for some 35 years.

Sorry to confuse things Marc, what I meant to say...
The UK factory produced types are all embroidered The printed type with embroidered TT were squaddie made I’m sure That’s a long way of saying there was never an all printed version Jack |
