Default Absolute deceitful.

I never cease not to be surprised by all the rubbish being offered upon ebay, so much so, that I seldom even look these days, but, someone asked me about the Household Battalion yesterday, there were three examples that had been noted being offered upon ebay, at £36, £47.08 and £59.99, all the most obvious completely spurious awful looking fakes.

I simply remarked that an original example could be found in due course by someone with sixty quid to spend!

Sadly as long people keep not bothering to do their research and fool themselves into thinking they're grabbing a bargain, the faking con men will keep servicing that demand. Just look at this dross:

Cool Research!

When bidding I think it pays to research the seller as well as the item, always be wary of someone consistently selling rare items, unless they are a well known established collector with a good reputation and then you have to look carefully.

Found in a WWII bag and made in Pakistan last year . . !

That is the reason that I have to decide to buy only in here! In ebay I bought a lot of garbage not for looking for bargains but for my ignorance...here you know that you spend money in legit badges...that's great!

This ties in with my views about "private listings" . A couple of times I've seen a badge I have/want and been sure the same seller has previously sold one , so decided to check feedback to see how much it went for.

Feedback doesn't give details of badge or final cost and simply shows "private listing" and I must admit that this puts me off buying from certain sellers.

I tend not to bid on private listings, for a start you can be run up with shill bidding more easily and I feel a certain amount of distrust with the seller for whatever reason, why hide the buyer?

Totally agree.
Several of the well known dodgy dealers with multiple ebay user names use such a ploy.

My eBay garbage from the week before Christmas.

Personally I think you find more bargains more frequently on the bay.

There are of course many dodgy dealers to totally avoid.

And as I always say, buy the badge not the seller or their story.

Thanks Simon. I really had to push the boat out on one and spend a whole £35! . Thankfully the others were less... ‘evil bay’ eh, as some call it.

The buyers bear half the responsibility for the continued prospering of fake merchants. Research, Research, Research which clearly some people are not prepared to undertake to save their wallet. More fool them. There is plenty of source material. Websites and books have proliferated over the last 20 years so there really is no excuse for some of the dross people buy. I accept we all get caught out, I certainly have been recently but thanks to members here have regained my money illustrating the benefit of online alongside the published works.

As for ebay plenty of bargains to be had if you exercise a bit of due diligence.

Happy hunting 2021.

Mark

Thanks to this forum and the experts I have learned so much and to be more careful in my eBay buys. If I see a badge I think I want I like to check the sellers other items and see if there are any known fakes that I recognize. If so, I am going to do more research. But I too have found some decent buys, but the prize has to be the buyer who got a good UTP cap badge for 9 GBP!!! I was going to bid on it, but it closed before I could do so.

So, my sincere thnaks to everyone who shares and advises re good vs. fake badges!

Terry

It cost me a bit over the £9 start price but still a screaming bargain. Should arrive this week I hope.

There is still plenty of good material and relative bargains to be found on epay, IF one has the patience to wade through all the garbage. It does seem that there is more of it these days though.
