Sweetheart brooch suspicions

I have been collecting button based sweet heart brooches for a while now, I think there is some interesting data to learn from them, quite often they are made from GS buttons with less common back marks for a start.

Its difficult to use the word fake because many are home crafted at various times in history, but this lot of 53 buttons all with a very similar brooch conversion has me a bit worried, I won't post the pictures from ebay but here is a link.

Most button conversions seem to date from the first quarter of the 20th century, at least one of these seems to have the late 1940s "Gaunt London" back mark.

Here is one in my collection with the same fitting which is also now suspicious.

As you say, you cannot say 'fake' but I would say that these are of recent manufacture (the brooch attachment to the buttons). Possible that the vendor acquired a number of buttons with broken shanks and then attached the modern brooches to make them saleable.

I think a clue is in the description :

"Hand Made Trench Art Style Sweetheart Button Badges"

"Hand Made Souvenirs Remembering WW1."

There is no claim they are genuine .

That would also be a good description for a contemporary piece.

I wonder if a collector did that more recently in order to pin the buttons of a cloth for display rather than the vendor having ruined a bunch of good buttons.
