Default 38th Battalion CEF badge sizes

G'day

Still working on my Ottawa CEF unit badge display. I recently got another badge to the 38th Battalion. However when comparing it to one already in my collection, I noticed a significant size difference. It is not a collar badge. As you can see in the scan below, there are 3 distinct sizes. Is this just a manufacturing difference, or is the middle badge used for something else.

Dwayne

Hi Dwayne, Just to throw a wrench into your question, I was re-reading Harper's A Source of Pride and he indicates that the Ottawa Highlanders used the 38th Bn badge for a period of time in the 1920's.

Default Old stock

I imagine they would have been issued NOS from whatever was left over. Still doesn't explain the size differences. I was looking through Vic Taboika 's book and on the 38th battalion page, he shows a sun helmet that has a badge that might be similar in size as to the middle one in my scan.

Default 1920-22

Going back through some notes,,,and the Ottawa Highlanders badge came in late 20's so it would make sense that some CEF era badges were worn into the 20's

Still doesnt explain the different sizes. The last badge on the right is a collar badge. Was just using it as a refence to demonstrate the size differences.

Anyone else with input??

I was wondering if you could provide dimensions, I have a couple in my collection, now wondering if my cap badge is the normal one or your middle mystery badge.

Thanks
Chris
