Default Australia ww2 merchant navy badge

Hi there,

Here is a little display & tribute to the australian merchant sailors who served during ww2.

And a few interesting links I found, related to this little badge & ship:

Cheers & Happy St Patrick,

JD

My maternal grandmother used to take the Wanganella (leaving from the port of Onehunga) down the east coast of NZ to visit her parents in Taranaki.

She would get off in Wanganui and then tale the train up to Patea.

She was a really bad sailor and was seasick most of the voyage....

P.S. I have one of the WW1 Australian Merchant Service badges that I would like to identify but I think that the records are less than complete.

Hi Dumdum,

Thanks for sharing this piece of family history. As the topic Wanganella seems to interest you, below another interesting link on this ship:

Thanks for the posting the links above. Interesting information on the torpedoed merchant seaman badge. Particularly for seaman who survived multiple sinkings.
There were a few of these that came on the market a few years back and should have tried to get one at that time.

Hi Irish,

Yes, found this article quite interesting too, shedding some light on a topic & badge (torpedoed merchant seamen) I would probably have looked at doubting before & guessed as one possibly for an unknown navy torpedo branch qualification badge.

Cheers,

JD
