Grumpy,

They came with other unrelated WW1 and WW2 insignia I thought they might be WW1 initially but really don't know enough about them to be sure hence asking here.

Happy New Year

Mark

Thank you

OK, but what then is RSM Parkin, 1st GG, wearing in a photo taken in Oct 1914 near Ypres, on p.18 of the Osprey book The Old Contemptibles? It's clearly a full-word curved title in what looks to me like white on red.

This is a fascinating subject and I am grateful for the above. What set me off is an article by Alan Jeffreys/ Gary Gibbs in MHS Bull 242 in which they illustrate with examples from IWM collection submitted by the battalions in the field 1917.

Apart from Coldstream, where the jury is out, the battalions were wearing curved worsted titles, GG white on scarlet, plus roman numeral except 2GG arabic 2, , SG ditto with 2SG adding thistle, IG ditto white on dark green, WG ditto white on black.

Further complications are slip-ons bearing gilding metal letters and badge, slip ons worn as such rather than top of shoulder, plus the consideration of the standard pre-war 1902 SD pattern standard infantry white on scarlet.

Anyone need to see the article PM me with e-mail address.

Whilst noting Grumpy`s kind offer to let members here see the article he refers to, the New Year might be a good time for those who are not members of the MHS (s) to think about joining one or both of these Societies.

Having finally got around to joining The Military Heraldry Society some months ago, I found that each of the first 3 issues of the bulletin I received solved a long-standing badge identification problem.
