Rob,

Very impressed with your new Button albums.

A lot of research gone into those and much appreciated.

I only collect buttons to the constituent units of the Manchester Regiment and my favourites are those made in Ireland for the Officers of the 63rd Foot whilst stationed there. I have 2 makers, namely:-

A. Clancy, Dublin; P. Tait & Co, Limerick

I also like Manchester based makers and have buttons to the Manchester Regiment by:-

J.H. Hilton & Co, Manchester (QVC) David Jones, Manchester (KC)

There must be overseas makers of this Regiments buttons out there but havent seen any so far.

regards

Hello Rob

I'm sure your are right about the other ranks aspect.

My original information said military outfitters and tailors (rather than button makers) but I suspect the emphasis was on outfitters rather than bespoke tailors!

I found a reference to a 1924 advert for them as "manufacturer of military accoutrements, uniforms, oilskin & india rubber goods, tarpaulins, tent, saddlery, horse clothing, outfitting etc. wholesale & export merchants and general warehousemen, government contractors".

Not exactly Hawkes & Co of Savile Row!

Thank you Simon

Its nice to connect a local back mark to a Regiment of interest, I have a few Plymouth and Exeter back marked buttons to go with my Devon Regiment interests.

Talking of P.TAIT of Limerick, did I read somewhere that their buttons were made by Smith & Wright?

Rob

Yes there was a thread recently where it was more or less worked out that a lot of 'P Tait' backmarked buttons seem to have been made by Smith & Wright. P Tait was another military contractor/outfitter, of course, not a button maker.

Roger,

Outfitters and not makers, thats good to know.

Do you know if the other Irish 'maker' was such and also the two Manchester 'makers'?

Hello Simon

I have David Jones of Manchester as a tailor/outfitter and the same for J H Milton & Co, Manchester (you mentioned 'Hilton' but is this possibly 'Milton'?).

As for Clancy, Dublin, I have only records of their backmark, no record of whether they were maker or retailer. I suspect they were a retailer of one form or another simply because their name does not appear as often as I would expect if they were a maker. That's just speculation though and I may well be wrong.

The only Manchester back mark I have found is this one on a WM QVC GS button.

I will keep my eyes open for them on any Manchester Regiment buttons.

A large Kings Crown GM general service button with moths marked C J Webb & Co Ltd Birmingham, is this another tailor or retailer?

Hello Rob

As far as I am aware, C J Webb & Co did not make the buttons themselves as they were clothing manufacturers, so probably bought in the buttons they used on uniforms. In this case it looks as if the buttons were made by Smith & Wright again.

I believe this is the firm that combined with J Compton & Sons in 1922 to form J Compton Sons & Webb.

Thanks Roger

Increasingly I'm finding the backs of buttons more interesting than the fronts.
