late great war early post war wolseley helmet
a recent purchase, WWI type wolseley sun helmet, the head band is mounted on cork buffers which was phased out by c.1922, and has all the characteristics of a late great war sun helmet or possibly early war, it has the short lived letter over W/I\D over inspectors number, introduced to replace the early/mid war system of number over W/I\D over letter. Pre great war the system used was different and from research they returned to the pre war system by 1922, though it might have been slightly earlier, finding marked and dated examples can be a problem.
it has the cork mounted headband used until the c.1922 vero type with metal pin mounting was introduced, as shown in one of the pics below. in 1935 the system was introduced of letter over wd over inspectors number which was used until 1959. this latter system is very well known and is similar in appearance to the example on the wolseley, but did not use A until 1950, which the helmet in question is obviously not of that date. Somewhat of mystery but it seems a date of 1918 to 1921 seems correct for the helmet. pre war was as shown below from an example, obviously the inspectors number and date changes W/I\D 9 1904 early to mid war was, inspectors number over wd arrow over depot letter code 15 W/I\D P late war was letter code, I don't think anyone knows exactly what this stood for, but could be a depot, over wd arrow over inspectors number A W/I\D 17 by c.1922 it has returned to the pre war system of wd arrow over inspectors number over full date I have borrowed some images to illustrate my points.

Jerry,
Very interesting and I am always trying to date items by those markings. Is there a reference guide, on line or otherwise you can recommend for them please. regards

Simon,
much is covered in the link, though the link from there to the great war forum no longer works so I have included an updated link, also a useful thread from this forum. https://www.warrelics.eu/forum/unifo...eaning-268363/ https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/...omment-2933665 https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ghlight=floppy

I remember hearing about
Suciu, P and Bates, S, 2009, Military Sun Helmets of the World which I haven't got around to read yet! In fact I think if you type in Suciu you'll get loads of FSH info. |

Late war/early Post War
Jerry
I find this very interesting. Specifically the period from mid/late war to 1922 when you see the overlap between WW1 design pith helmets with cork spacers to the letter over WD over number. How to determine whether a helmet with cork/buff spacers with such a stamp is late war 1916-1918 vs post war 1919-1922? Best, Mike |

the system with the wd markings prior to 1931 is confusing at best, and might not actually be dateable just from the letters, as it is post 1931
Z= 1931 Y= 1932 X= 1933 W= 1934 V= 1935 U= 1936 T= 1937 S= 1938 R= 1939 Q= 1940 P= 1941 O= 1942 N= 1943 M= 1944 Z= 1945 L= 1946 E,P= 1947 R,J= 1948 J,A= 1949 A,B=1950 B= 1951 C= 1952 L= 1953 M= 1954 D,O,=1955 T= 1956 S= 1957 F= 1958 X= 1959

This is a pre 1922 helmet (cork spacers). On the sweat band is C above /l\ above 14. It may be possible to determine what year "C" correlates with based on his War record. His initials are G.B. and the name written on the sweatband appears to be Boughey. Rank private. There is a number 5.046125. ? His mil ID#?
I haven't been able to identify a Pvt Boughey, first initial G who was a member of the S.Lan.R. |

here is my other sun helmet of this type from the same period, with cork spacers, and flash which matches that used by the Worcestershire regiment, it also has traces of green paint on the dome vent top, which is also a Worcestershire regiment feature
