FAO: Grey Green Acorn - Films & TV
Tim,
Re your British Army - Badges in Films and Television album... if you aren't already aware, I thought you might be interested in the attached link to an episode of Steptoe & Son ('Pilgrim's Progress' - series 4, episode 7), in which Albert and Harold embark upon a trip to the WWI battlefields of France. We see Albert in the opening scene donning his Royal Fusiliers service dress and trench cap, in which he wears Churchill Fig.190 as the cap badge (decent-ish shot of cap and badge in closing credits). Div badges too, though how historically accurate any of it is is open to discussion. https://youtu.be/l1Qfmzzbe98 Cheers, JT |

JT,
Many thanks. I remember seeing the original episode in 1965 and many repeats and always thought (despite his lack of stature) that it was Grenadier Guards! Pictures added to album! http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...p?albumid=2439 Tim

They don't make 'em like they used to.
Maybe Chris (Drew) can fill us in on the triangular Div badge on Albert's SD jacket. Regards, JT Last edited by Jelly Terror; 31-03-18 at 10:43 PM. |

Magnificent, I used to love Steptoe, still do!! There was one episode when he said he was in the Guards and another when they were moving a piano into a posh guy's flat & he asked them to remove their boots and put on these pointed Turkish slippers to which Albert replied " I fought the Turks in Gallipoli and they weren't wearing these bleedin things" classic stuff, cheers JT

Clive Dunn puts in an appearance in this one; pre-Dad's Army, of course. Hancock [recounting supposed acts of wartime bravery to Sid James]: "Only one thing for it; hand grenade. We pulled the pin out with our teeth. Front forward 'chickadee-slitch!' Threw 'em. What an explosion right on their ammo dump. I've still got a piece of metal inside me today. Sid: You have? Hancock: I swallowed the pin. Cheers, Wilf, JT Last edited by Jelly Terror; 01-04-18 at 12:03 AM. |

The son used to wear a souvenir belt. Get a look at it in a few episodes.

Your album is brilliant! Thanks for posting it! Many of the programs mentioned never made it to the the States, but I couldn't help remembering favorites growing up, such as "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and "The Great Escape." They must have had badges in them. What about current films set during wartime, eg. "Dunkirk" and "Darkest Hour"? Great topic!

Not sure this meets the remit of your ongoing project/album, Tim, but I spotted the following badge (coat lapel) last night watching Woody Allen’s ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’:

I think Tom Courtenay wore a RTR badge as the prisoner camp provost in film King Rat. regards, Paul.
Found a picture- https://www.bing.com/th?id=OIP.Sb0Qi...r=1.25&pid=1.7 King and Country was another good film of his. Regards, Paul. PS John Mills was Wiltshire Regiment in the BW Dunkirk. Last edited by wardog; 15-09-18 at 02:08 PM. |

Officers collar badge and button and ORs button of the The Royal Cumbrian Regiment, 2002 production of "The Four Feathers".
I think I have an ORs GS button in brass that was worn in the film too. |

No "The Hill" (1965) in the album?
Sean Connery wears the RTR beret and badge (1950's-60's style, a la Para extras in "Paratrooper" / "The Red Beret" 1953), Roy Kinnear the FSC with RF badge, LF, Scots Guards, Pioneer's plus other badges shown. In "Paratrooper" / "The Red Beret" Ladd wears a glengarry, I don't know what badge is on it, he's playing an American posing as a Canadian I think. |

I watched 'The Long and the Short and the Tall' the other day (Richard Todd, Richard Harris, Ronald Fraser, Laurence Harvey, David McCallum, et al). Not the greatest war film ever made, and, to my annoyance, a severe lack of insignia on display too.

"I only watch war films for the insignia". Hmmmmm - sounds rather like the old defence of "I only buy Playboy for the articles dear".

Mind you, it was a double DVD... the other film on the disc was 'Ice Cold in Alex'. |
