Jim, Nice selection of scarce badges.
Is there any maker's mark on the Norther Pioneers badge?

Bill... Yes, it's marked W SCULLY by the head and MONTREAL thru the bottom of the axes. Hope that helps.

Thanks Jim. All the Northern Pioneer badges that I have examined are either unmarked or marked by Scully. There is an officer's pattern for the Pioneers. It is frosted sterling silver, with overlays.

IU think the Northern Pioneers come in white metal and monel metal as well. I have one that is magnetic and another that is not.

Hello Greg, I have a white metal Northern Pioneer's badge, and research indicates that it is was an NCO's badge. They are quite scarce. I will have to do a magnet check on that one to see if it is magnetic.
It would be unusual to have the Northern Pioneer badge in monel. Monel was supposed to be used by only units in the area the ore was mined, eg the Sault Ste Marie & Sudbury Regt, and the Alqonquin Regiment. The metal was so hard that it wore the dies out very quickly. Early in WW2, the metal was declared a strategic material, and no more of it was available for stamping badges. The balance of the war saw the badges for the Algonquins struck in white metal. I am not sure if the SSM & SR had any struck in white metal, but there are different die strikes for that unit.
