Default 8th Foot: marks on back of plate

Anyone any ideas of what the marks on the back of this plate might mean?

Thanks

P.

Default Battle of Isandlwana

Could be the Battle of Isandlwana? Which started on 22 January 1879?
Just a wild guess.

I think it could well be the date it was issued from the QMs, silver arm badges for the cavalry tend to have their date scored on the back as this denotes how much to pay when exchanging it.

Only my suggestion.

Ian

Thanks for the replies.

Strange there are two sets of marks.

Could it be the commission date of the chap who wore it?
Easy way for him to determine the plate amongst others.
In my collection of waist belt clasps I have a number with full names and even commission dates on them, as well as just initials. And I've seen this on both Officers and rarely (but a few times) on Other Ranks Buckles.
Although to be honest if it was, 1879 may be a bit late for the style of the plate, perhaps 22nd Jan 1779 might be correct as a commission date?.

Thanks Stenoyab,

Plenty of food for thought.

Isn't this a shako plate of an 1812-1815 shako?
Looking through the MHS Shako publication, this plate is very similar to one of the 1812 shako plates, the later ones are completely different.
Maybe it's not a date at all??

It's certainly a mystery.
Just looked through your albums Peter, don't know why I haven't before, you literally have a museum!
A wonderful collection!
Cheers

Looks wrong for a date to me , did they do year/month/day back then ?

Found a site about "The Belgic Shako" with a nice photo of an '8th Foot' plate :
