Scots Guards patch
I have just acquired this, which I was told is a Scots Guards hat flash. If so, what type of hat is it, or was it, worn on please?

If it is to be worn on the cap, it would be on the sides of the officer's khaki Service Dress cap, but I'm not sure if that diced pattern or a tartan patch would be worn.
I think the Royal Stewart tartan is worn. Last edited by leigh kitchen; 29-04-19 at 10:03 AM. |

I need to check books, I have an idea that the officer's of the 1st & 2nd Battalions Scots Guards wore different patches, one the diced, the other the Royal Stewart.
Have I got that around my neck Andy? |

From "Badge Backings And Embellishments OfThe British Army" - in 1916 officers of the 1st Bn began to wear a small patch of Royal Stewart tartan either side of the service cap, the 2nd Bn wore a full diced cap band which in 1917 was changed to two patches of dicing of nine squares.
At the end of WWI the 1st Bn retained their patches, the 2nd Bn didn't. At the time of publication (1992) 1st Bn still wore the tartan patches, measuring 1 1/2" X 2". In 1944 officers of 1st and 2nd Bns adopted a Royal Stuart badge backing on the beret, the 3rd Bn didn't. Is the badge shown in post no. 1 manufactured in that form or is it simply a short strip cut from the Scots Guards forage cap band? |

Scots Guards
According to Marc's booklet this patch was worn by 1 Bn,, about 2004, on both sides of their floppy desert hats.

Two photos that may help - the Royal Stuart tartan worn on the SD cap and the badge shown worn between the wars on the Wolseley helmet.

Thanks for the information, gentlemen. It looks as though it has been cut from the headband of the peaked cap, as Marc says in his book. I should have looked there first!!!
