Great addition to your collection Mike.
What is on the badge below the G in guard? It looks like a blob of glue or resin? |

Hi Bill......
Just a lump of old yellow varnish..... The badge is Bronze with a gilt covering..... The gilt has worn off in a number of places and I guess the previous owner in trying to conserve the gilt has covered the badge with varnish...... Am going to take it to the MM here and see if one of the conservitors can suggest a way to remove it...... Mike

Hi Mike, I am glad to see your collection growing. That is a very nice Natal Victorian item(my personal favourite collecting area). Have a grand evening. Andrew

The NGR probably had its most famous ( infamous ?) moments when one of the Conductors threw Mahatma Ghandi off a train for travelling in the wrong carriage. Here are a few more cap badges from the post 1902 period - used intil the NGR was incorporated in the South African Railways.
The Victorian guard badge is very rarely seen - you have a good one there. Mike |
