Missing lugs / relugged Badges?
What value consideration do you put on missing or re-lugging badges as compared to a complete original badge?

Hi Bill,
I would say that whether viewed as a repair or restoration the fact that a badge has replacement loops or a slider has to detract from the badge's value to some extent. On the one hand I would much rather see a badge restored than leave it missing its fixings. On the other hand there is the question of the standard of repair. If it is carried out sympathetically and to a high standard I think it adds to the appeal of a badge especially if it is something of a rarity as opposed to a run of the mill example. An example of this can be found in this thread http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=35472 With regard to this badge, I have added 20% of my purchase price of this badge to reflect its restored condition and the cost of having the work done but it is still in my opinion priced at 20% below the minimum I would expect to pay for an original untouched/undamaged example. By the way, I am selling this badge in the hope of purchasing another badge from the same era that appears to have some damage; this badge is priced at my asking price for the repaired badge so if I choose to go for a restoration on the new badge I will still be out of pocket to a degree. In the frame of badges below no less than five of them have had some kind of restoration work, done as a necessity due to their age and the difficulty in finding examples that have survived 100% intact. All the restoration work whether carried out by myself or others has been done sympathetically to a good standard and I am happy to call all of them good badges. Would anyone like to take a guess at the badge I need to fill the gap? Ry Last edited by Charlie585; 21-11-13 at 02:24 PM. |

Hi Ry,
Very nice display you have! Possibly the missing badge you refer to is the small KC badge in this lot? Cheers, Tinto |

Thanks Tinto,
A good guess but that badge features in another display, shown below. The badge needed to fill the gap in the other frame is the Guelphic crown Militia Glengarry badge, also shown below. I've just purchased another example of this badge after parting with two previously. One of these days I'll decide what I'm going to collect and stick to it, then again pigs might fly Regards Ry Last edited by Charlie585; 21-11-13 at 02:24 PM. |

After repair, by a man who can (Dave) I would say the badge would be at least 2/3 average value, though I've never sold one on after repair. Just my opinion! Cheers Tony.

Another attractive display, Thanks Ry.
That's the beauty of this hobby, you can go where your fancies fly. A bit of "swings and roundabouts", you lose some, you gain some. Good Luck with your collecting, Tinto |

Your words ring true 'swings and roundabouts'! I went ahead with the purchase of a RB Militia badge late last night to fill that gap only for a forum friend to answer (belatedly) in the positive to my enquiry on the sale of his one moments later Today I made an enquiry on another of his items only to find that it had sold elsewhere by the time I got home from work You can't win 'em all though so here's to next time, all part of the fun Regards Ry |

Here is the frame again with the gap filled.
The RB Guelphic crown Militia badge arrived this morning and I'm very pleased with it. It looks a lot lighter in colour in the image than it actually is, though I'm pleased to say that what I thought was damage to the loops is only minor pinching and no repair is required.
