Also worn on the norwegian army ski cap and Deputy Dawg cap (I think the proper name was 'cap, extreme cold weather') back in the day.

I obtained this sort of style black embroidered WOI andWOII insignia from a RM Commando stores at Shackleton Barracks, Ballykelly in 1979.
The Colour Sergeant told me that they and the NCO chevrons of the same type were no longer going to be issued as they were being replaced by a new style of woven black on green insignia which would be worn by RM and army.
He was disgusted with the change.
It was my first sighting of the new insignia so I obtained a set of those NCO and WO ones.
(They were a definite black on green, later examples I've seen have been more of a very dark green on green).
Another change that hacked off the Colour was that WO's leather wrist straps were now being changed from dark brown to tan coloured leather. The RQMS crown in wreath anodized aluminium insignia were too big for the new straps and had to be fitted by bending their lugs around the leather "disc" as a make-do.
