Hi all.
I'm a real novice at this game but I've been left what seems to me a large collection of badges by my late father in law. Trying to catalogue them all but not sure if I'm getting it right.
Will be looking to sell at some point so any advice from anyone out there would be really appreciated.

Tony

welcome to the forum. Post some pictures of the fronts and backs and I would be happy to help. However be prepared for some to be copies before you get your hopes up!

Default Sizeable collection

Will post some photos over the next week or so.
Already had a disappointment with LRDG but may have a genuine 51/52 commandos.
Just got through Cavalry, on to guards and then all the rest.
Is there a reference book you'd recommend?

Maybe Kipling and King.

I think Kipling and King may be a little advanced for what you want and you would most likely have to purchase volume 1 and 2 I would just look at the numerous. albums on here and any you can't find just ask as many members do
A cheaper basic ref book for identification would be John Gaylor Military badge collecting -but like most older ref books contains some errors

The problem with the books is that the photos are not great. If you look at the albums on the Forum then you can generally find an example of most cap badges.

Default Can you identify these 2 for me?

Attached pictures of badges I'm struggling to identify. Cant work out the cypher on the grenade. Think the other may be Household Cavalry or a Guards regiment.
Thanks very much in advance if you can help.

Tony

As said, genuine HAC Infantry and the other is a fake/fantasy badge that is seen a lot.

Loads of fake 50-52 ME Cdo badges out there (note 50/52 not 51/52) - plenty of threads here on what to look for - but post images if you wish - the back of the badge is important with this one.

Difficult to be sure as the image is not clear - The lugs are generally made from flat metal, bent over, both legs cast into the back of the cast badge - as illustrated below. Yours look to be rounded metal bent over into a loop (eye), rather than flat - generally not a good sign. Look at the inside of the eye in the example illustrated below - flat not rounded. - Hoping this helps. Better image of yours would be welcome.

Post Collection for sale

I've recently finished cataloging my collection of badges of which there are around 350.
Be grateful for any advice you can give me on best way to proceed.
Sell to a dealer? Auction? Sell off what i think are the valuable items and the rest as a job lot.
Will really appreciate any replies

Tony
