I can't prove it but I think embroidered signs preceded printed ones. Signs were made variously in at least four different forms in World War 2 - Embroidered on Felt, Linen or Cotton and Printed of course and additionally what is referred to as Silk Embroidered (or Weave) and Painted on (usually) Linen. Also Wire embroidered on Felt, Metal on Felt and Felt on Felt. I'm sure there are more variations ( I have a painted on tin 3 Indian Division (Special Force) sign).
