A few great ones came calling this year, but one of the special ones was this, issued to Female workers in AIF (Australian Imperial Forces) Headquarters, London, and hallmarked 1917.
Happy Christmas to all Cheers, Tim |

Some superb items shown, very nice to see.
My favourite item I was lucky to find this year is to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Worn by Officers and SNCO's of the 1st Bn in the 1890's according to museum records. Just to say: I've been a Forum member for a year now, and while I don't feel I often have much to contribute, I have greatly appreciated all the help and advice given plus friendships made. Do enjoy reading, seeing and learning much from following different topics posted on the Forum. Merry Xmas and best wishes for the New Year to all. Pat |

What was your favourite find of the year
One of my special finds of the year was the Cylon Planters Officers Gilt hat badge,
You will not find in Barry Renfrew's book. A really nice looking badge, If anyone wants a photo of Front and Back let me know. A the same time I would like to wish all members of the Forum a Very Merry Christmas and All the Very Best for 2018 Ray Smith. |

Best of 2017 - Port Glasgow Burgh Police button
Quote:
My runner-up for 2017 would be the Ras al-Khaimah Police Chief’s gorget patch, however in first place is this previously unrecorded* Port Glasgow Burgh Police button - it wasn’t cheap - but it isn’t in either of Howard Ripley’s books on Police Buttons or in John Green’s Scottish Insignia as used by old Police Forces. Good hunting to all for 2018 Graham * As far as I and my source know.

After missing it once many years ago, I managed this year to finally add the Queenstown Rifle Volunteers Highland Company Cap badge to my collection. May 2018 bring many more for all of us. Regards Andrew

You'll all be expecting me to select an Essex Yeo badge so I'm going to break with tradition
1st (Ongar) Essex Cadets. Ongar Grammar school established 1865 and closed 1930. Cadets were affiliated to the 1st VB Essex Regiment then 4th Bn. Quite an uncommon badge but I just like the design, also one of the few badges I have seen to have 'croquet hoop' fixings, long metal lugs since the badge was worn on a slouch hat. If I were allowed a 'double-tap' though, runner up would either be the EIY officer's gilt (second) pattern slouch hat or the Essex ACF cloth badge ;-) Both have their own dicussion threads. Merry Christmas to all on the Forum. Michael |

Michael,
A lovely badge, I find it almost Germanic in design with the Oak leaf style surround. Simon |

Some great acquisitions have been posted here. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Many times a photograph showing a specific button, patch or badge being worn, is harder to find than the actual insignia/button. A great portrait JT. |

Roy.
Nice button. Although could add one or two buttons as good purchases this year I'll have to go for my Welsh Hospital Boer War cap badge. Ta Jonathan DSC04521 (1).jpg |

For me it was getting this MC & pair miniature group and his AFC wings both hand chiselled engraved with his name and he is the second chap from the left as he is a local chap.

As with a lot of the favourites mentioned so far, this one was certainly not cheap but they do not come along very often so I had to move on some other stuff to compensate - The Royal Marine Artillery Officer's Busby Badge (1863-78).

As newbie (and non-collector) I really don't know if I qualify to add here, but I have so enjoyed reading the forums and witnessing the enthusiasm expressed over new purchases, I just wanted to be part of it!
I recently received a very small tin box, part of my mother's estate, which had a few of her father's (and a couple of uncle's) badges in... plus a couple of very interesting surprises. The first was something I think my great uncle brought back when he and his 2 brothers were on a "world tour" (read as US, Canada, France and England) with the Young Australia League (YAL) in 1925. The second is my favourite, but not a military badge. It is the Life Membership badge given to my grandfather for his contribution to the Maimed & Limbless Ex Servicemen's Association as member, Secretary and then President over many years. It is 9ct gold and made by jeweller Sheridan of Perth. Thank you for your indulgence. |
