Could it have anything to do with the Earl of Carrick's Own Yeomanry?
Cheers,
Alex

All I can tell you is that it looks like a post WWII backmark.

I've seen these buttons offered for sale as Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's) Yeomanry in the past but whether that is what they are, I don't know. This pattern isn't shown in Ripley's Yeomanry buttons book.

As regards the "Gaunt London" backmark, I've never been able to get a definitive answer as to when it was first introduced but I would say no earlier than 1945 and maybe as late as the early 1950's.

I have a few (British) Indian Army buttons with this backmark so, if genuine, they would be pre 1947. On the other hand they might be Gaunt restrikes from the 1970's as they also had the same backmark, but that's a whole different subject!

David

Carleton Uni COTC - that's why it's not in Ripley's Yeomanry book!
