19th Hussars Arm badge? or FS Cap?

Hi Folks, I am hoping that someone can offer some advice on this one. I cant identify it from Linaker & Dine. It was purchased in South Africa 30 years ago and appears to be silver, with screw post attachment.

I would guess a "Light Dragoons" pouch badge....... with the separate "ASSAYE" Scroll missing that would be positioned above it? (A more modern version is on eBay at the moment ..... its not me being clever )

Thanks Griff, but there are some subtle differences between the LD Elephant and the one I have shown..there is also the fact that the LD were raised in 1992. This badge has been around for a lot longer than that in my opinion.
I must admit I did think pouch badge, but cant find an image of one being worn for the 19th.

Hi Jim

The closest I can come is to suggest it could have been an officer's full dress crossbelt badge as per first photograph.
A similar badge was worn in the Foreign Service Helmet (FSH) in India in 1920, but this is unlikely to have had screw fittings.
I have also posted the FSH badge together with the NCOs' Arm badge. The latter is a little smaller.
Both are shown in Linaker and Dine, page 122, fig. 38.2

Hi Gordon, yes, I thought it unlikely that the FS cap would take screw posts. Your suggestion of cross belt, with the example shown is pretty close ( the foreground is slightly different) But taking all things into consideration it is the most likely answer....Now all I need to do is find the scrolls!

Hi Jim,

Just as an aside, that design of elephant and scroll used by musicians in the Light Dragoons are staybrite, that's if you can believe Robin hodges book..

Good evening Jim,

I have two 19H pouch badges. The 19th Hussars white metal pouch badge that I have measurers 32.8mm from the top of the elephants back to the underside of the grass base. The hall-marked silver one, by J & Co (Jennens) dated 1913, measures, as above, 30.6mm. Measurement taken with an electronic digital caliper. Both badges are fitted with two studs situated east west. The 19H pagri badges face the same way but are noticeably smaller and have two loops situated east west. The 19H NCOs' arm badges face to the viewers right so that when being worn they face to the front.

Hello Peter, thanks for the reply. my measurement is I am afraid with a ruler!
So could be 30.6....I am certain that it is silver, so could it in fact be a pouch badge? rather than a cross belt badge? can you give me the measurements between the studs of yours for comparison?

Good morning Jim,

The white metal pouch badge studs centres, measured with a ruler, 1". The hall marked silver pouch badge studs measure 7/8th" centre to centre. I also have a 19H pouch belt
badge in silver though sadly without a hall mark which measures 41.3mm (1.6ins) top to bottom. The stud centres on this badge measure 1". I wouldn't think that these stud centre measurements are hard and fast on all badges and possibly differ by a few mm or fractions of an inch here and there.

Further to my previous post my officer's crossbelt badge, B&P 1900, measures 33mm top to bottom and has two studs, E-W, 20.7mm, outside measurements,taken with a Draper caliper and shaky hands.
The FSH badge measures 32.5mm.
Let me throw the third one in for opinions. I have posted this one before and failed to attract any views. The elephant measures 31.5mm top to bottom of the grass and has two loops. It has been verified as being silver. Could this have been a pouch badge, for the band perhaps?

Regarding your attachment, I really don't have any information be it photographic, written or anecdotal to support the idea that it could have been worn by members of the Band. It may well have been. I've looked through my 19H files and apart from having several pictures of the regiments various drum horses I have nothing which depicts members of the Band. Whilst viewing the drum horses I can tell you that in the centre of the nose band there is an elephant badge similar to the badge being discussed, but wihtout the XIX.
Does any member of the Forum specialise in regimental Bands who may be able to come to our aid?.

I am just adding to this thread as I believe it is one of the few that illustrates the Assaye scroll that I recently acquired.

Mine has screw posts and a rather strange attachment and I would like to think that it has a 19th Hussars connection.
