Default Silver 8th Cheshire badge.

I don’t normally comment on badges in a wider field as I am no expert, but on some Cheshire Regiment badges I feel that I can comment. On eBay there is a hallmarked silver badge for sale which in my opinion is a pretty poor fake. It has been hyped up to sound a very desirable badge here is part of the description.

Offered here is an original World War 1, British Territorial Army, 8th (Service) Battalion, The Cheshire Regiment, Hallmarked Sterling Silver, Officers' Cap Badge. The first pattern Silver cap badge in the form of an eight-pointed star. The old badge is in very good condition for its age, it has been used, the silver is in perfect condition and both eyelets in are good condition too.

In my opinion its not old just a poor-quality fake with too much material around the star points which should be clean. The seller shows his lack of knowledge as its described as a British Territorial Army, 8th (Service) Battalion, and how would he know it is from the 8th battalion. I have put photos of the silver badge along side a good badge and another duff badge for comparison.

It always amazes me that dealers can know enough about hallmarks to go on about how great they are but then neglect to mention the date letter and year! Alarm bells...

As a matter of interest the badge just sold for £110.76. Three bidders so two got off lucky.

Something similar is

Rare Liverpool Pals Cap Badge. (King's Liverpool Regiment)

It's actually a cast of a genuine one - you can see the original assay marks !!!

There are quite a number of King's Lpl badges on our bay that are appalling fakes these days. Mostly 1896 Pattern, Lpl Pals and Lpl Scots

I actually sent a message to the seller of the Cheshire badge to ask what the date letter was but he didn't know much about hallmarks to understand what I meant....

It's handy to have no knowledge of anything when selling badges of that quantity with a good story.
