RE VC cap badge - white metal
Hello gentlemen,
today i received this very nice cap badge for the Royal Engineers with Victorian crown. This badge is described in K&K Vol.I on page 229 and picture 850. If my interpretation is correct, it was worn on the forage cap from 1898 until 1902 - in gilding metal by OR´s. The badge i have got is die struck in very good quality from white metal and this is not mentioned in K&K. White metal indicates for me that it is perhaps for Engineer volunteers, and i have found badges in similar design in the albums with lettering "ENGINEER VOLUNTEER`S" (without ROYAL). I still did not find the clue to judge about the lugs, i know the should have no "feets", and they are darkened and hard, its better than they are "fresh copper" and weak. At least the badge itself looks very good, sharp contours, no flaws or something else. So i hope for your comments and opinions to find out what it realy is. Thanks in advance and kind regards Markus P.S.: weight 11,45g, height 46mm, 41mm wide. And apologize for my mistakes in my pigeon english. |

My opinion is it is not an original badge.
Appears to be from the same stable as this one by a well known purveyor of spurious wares https://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/d...s&item=BBE0009 |

K&K only have a small number of British Army badges. Many on this forum collect only to one regiment - with over a hundred badges.

If i look in my "Artillery-drawer" i have already a dozend of "K&K no. 808" for example. And that makes it so interesting for me to collect, read and learn about ...... Regards Markus |

Hi Markus just by posting this thread you and other’s learn, by posting this badge you have learnt why it is wrong and so have other’s reading the thread, hopefully you can return it or if not add to a board of fakes, I have picked up some pricey Howler’s and by posting onto the Forum have been guided by Simon and Luke amongst other’s on fakes I have acquired (Royal Irish Rgt. - Mollys 1609) you learn repeat send back! Unfortunately now a part of our hobby! Good luck billy

Thanks Billy,
that is the reason why i started reading and posting here in this forum. Only some month of experience in collecting british army badges, but a great fun for me to try a new field of interest. I have made experiences in other fields over 40 years, a long and painfull process of learning and also researching .... royal prussian orders and decorations make the center of my collection. And there it is very, very dangerous to make mistakes, expensive. The badge shown in post #1 came from a forum member and i guess he did not know that it´s a fake. Not too much money, and will keep it in my "hall of shame". Thanks to all members for the help and support, kind regards Markus |

Thanks for the compliment Malcom,
these are only 3rd and 4th class Red Eagle-Orders. If there is some interest i could show some more, i think there is a category "My other collections" to do that. Perhaps i will also present some from my german merchant navy collection ? Kind regards Markus |
