Kevin,
The undress ones can vary between 150-600ukp (although I am basing these prices from a few years ago, so may be out of touch with 'now'.) A lot depends on the condition (yours appears ok but the patent 'leather' ones tend to get very congealed over time, so watch out); and also the regiment ; and also whether the device is 'simple' or 'complex'. This one and the 5L one are quite delicate and don't usually survive very well e.g. the only 5L one I have seen that didn't have broken lances etc was in a museum. The 'Irish' related ones tend to be at the high end - same as the cap badges - as do the KDG, Bays and Household (related) cavalry ones. I would suggest you (as I did) get in touch with a restorer/museum for some advice on how best to keep it in good condition - with regard to temperature, sunlight etc. I also carefully removed al the fixing nuts on the ones I have and cleaned up the thread and nuts. I used a small amount of graphite on the threads and thoroughly cleaned the nuts in various liquids. The nuts were all left over a radiator for a few days. I would be very careful about removing the device itself from the sabretache - in fact if it 'does'nt want to be removed. Don't. Luckily my 6D 9and others) all came away easily. I am assuming that the only 5L I saw for sale at the 'Barakus(?)' auction may have been damaged in this way..... Good luck and well done. David |
