Rob
The long nose motto is a tricky one, yours has the nose blemish as does the one I have put next to it on the right (thumbnail pics below). This is an old Motto type and could have been restruck many times. I have collected one "without" the nose blemish and a tapered crimped slider to be on the safe side (can also be found with a longer straight slider -see thumbnails furthest right, also look at the sharp definition is the back of the badges). My "Long Nose" without the nose fault, tapered crimp slider:-

Hi Griff
My badge has a very fine crimp on the tapered slider and has been bent into a lovely convex shape, it also has what appears to be very honest looking wear on the front. I have always been confused by the "rear definition" issue, if a badge is restruck in an original die I find it hard to see how it's definition can differ from an original badge? Unless its because metal of a different thickness has been used?? But I bow to your experience on motto's and will look for a better one. Many thanks. Rob. |

Hi Rob
I have just got another, today, like yours. I didnt say yours was a restrike.... If you look at this one it has a nice long tapered slider and is polished (not as polished as yours). I will clean it up when I get it and put a detailed pic up The outline of this one is a little different to my first one and is the same as yours. So two variant types by the same maker possibly - or two different makers of the "Long nose"?

Certainly is..... I think its got some vintage too? Its a very crisp example.... not much "polishing" by the look of it. I think Malc [JOACHIM] (in his "Lancers" album) has a couple of the same but with shorter sliders and well polished.
The maker is not known on this one...... it looks like a "Smith & Wright Ltd".... but I am not sure that it is?

another motto for you
i need some help guys as i got a motto with no history, if you look at my profile pic, this is a motto i picked up after i asked some one for a 17th/21st lancers motto as i used to serve with them years ago and they told me they only had this one from the 17th lancers. on the back there is two threaded bars as there was nuts fitted to them at some point but only long enough to go through a metal plate so this would probably fit on a belt or piece of band equipment maybe even saddlery

Re Mottos
G'day Mr Rossi
Thanks for putting up the post, I have had a look at your profile and the badge you show (its not a Motto as it does not have the "Or Glory") but is a Queen Vic period horse harness badge, if its got 2 threaded bolts on the back it is probably off the martingale, they come in bi metal and all brass and also with a Kings Crown. Its a very nice piece. They were also used on the horses bit, have a look at some old photos. I can provide if you dont have access to any photos. If you have a look there are lots of threads on Mottos, GriffMJ has several threads and also some Album pages as well. Welcome to the forum, lm sure you will learn a lot, join in and have fun Regards Phil. Down Under. |

The Dowler Mottoes, probably the most rare of the 17th/21st Lancer A/A Mottoes. The one on the left is the FIRMIN produced but DOWLER makers marked from the 1980s..... and the one on the right is the true DOWLER from the early 1960s (The Smith & Wright Ltd Type). There might be another true DOWLER out there with a different back image and slider?
Now in my collection
