I think your dedication is second to none, you do a great job but can i ask please stop flooding the album chart with all the variations please just put them in one album with the details under the motto.

All the best
Malc

Hi Malc

I removed all the reference albums a few days ago, they were there so I could check for differences. I have one album for my "collected" Mottoes.... that is updated as soon as I receive the motto and photograph it.

Your Yeomanry Album is always updated in the same way I think?

Lurrrrvley!! just having a gander now

OK....

Top left : Silver Gaunt Motto (See L&D NCO arm badges, page 139, Fig 43.9 -17L, Right C, 40.8mm high, 47.9mm, loops E/W 41mm)
Botton two: Firmin type Sand cast Indian made..... long slider (dare I say Puggaree?.... ducking for cover now!!), other either Broderick or service cap replacement? (Die cast ???? its an early casting because of the sharp points to the back of the eye sockets).
Top right: How long are the loops.... is it silver ... are there any marks?

This is my 17L new addition (arrived today), Firmin type:-

I thinks its another QVC x3 loop converted to a slider fitting (nice deep crimp mark).

Hi Griff, it has standard lugs and is marked "silver" across the dome of the skull, which makes me think it is modern. Thanks for the quick response. Mike

Mike

I think your right, its a modern copy of the Officers beret badge...... marked silver. My only reservation is the scroll.... it has different lettering to the Gaunt pattern and marked "SILVER" does not automatically mean fake and it does "look" polished.

Do the loops look like they might have been "D" loops?

Is the one below "Sand cast" or is it "Die cast" or just dirty?

Hi Griff, the lugs are round, bog standard, but either plated or silver. The other is dirty, I very rarely clean badges. The lugs are very similar to those found on cast S.A. desert badges and some Indian made badges. As the lug is integral with the casting I would say it was sand cast. Mike

Mike

Does the Silver Gaunt Arm/cap Motto have a Hallmark? Have you ever cleaned it to find out? If it has it should be dated between 1900-11 and maker "JRG&S".

Below is your Silver Arm/cap Motto against my early Gaunt ORs white metal cap motto. There is a difference...... your silver looks like the modern Gaunt Mottoes.

Hi Griff, just played with it. It is die struck and plated, no sign of any name or hall mark. Mike

OK, that fits the arm/cap motto type. These were worn by Corporals on the arm pre WW1 and there are photos of Sgts wearing them in India (in the absence of a proper silver "Chad") pre WW1 as well.

Hi Griff, thanks for the information. Any chance they would have been worn later when they were mechanacalised? Mike
