Steve
Mine would be the early version of Edinburgh University OTC cap badge in Anodised Aluminium. Didn't pay a lot for it either. Photo is not too good as i did not want to remove it from the card in case i damaged the slider. Pre 1978 i believe and made by G S Tye & Co. Best Regards to all and happy hunting guys Stay Safe Steve |

As a nod to Gunners everywhere on this St. Barbara’s Day, here’s one of my best this year. White metal helmet plate to the Trinidad Artillery, c.1895.

Essex Yeomanry find
I bought this little treasure recently, missing it's loops and having traces of varnish on the front and remnants of adhesive on the reverse.
With a little TLC it now has two replaced loops and a bit of a clean. One for my Essex Yeomanry board. Rob |

Rob,
That design of badge does not feature in KK vol 1 or 2, or Gaylor as I can see. Nor is it I believe included in Michael Wood’s wonderful Essex Yeomanry albums or his excellent website on the subject: https://www.essexmilitarybadges.uk/y...n-and-gunners/ It is however present in Martin Marsh’s fake catalogue. I believe it’s a fantasy item. Regards Luke |

I am very pleased with a small album of British mess dress buttons. They are gilt on mother of pearl. Attached is an example.

Essex Yeomanry
Luke,
I have also thought that these badges which turn up from time to time were probably fakes, however, this appeared with a job lot which I bought and as I said, a little TLC and the loops were replaced. I sent Keith Hook a photo of the badge in the condition I bought it which he first thought was a cast copy of the badge which he had long regarded as a dud. When I gave it some TLC I sent him further photos which I have added to my first post and Keith sent me a photo of an Essex Yeomanry Trooper wearing a small solid badge as the one I have. As to whether this badge was made by Martin Marsh we will never Know, but after Keith sent me the photo it certainly seems not to be a fantasy item. Rob |

I can't pick just one, as I have been very blessed this year with so many pieces I've wanted, so I'll say the friends I've made on this forum top the list!

Rob,
Some of these fakes have been around up to 50 years and turn up broken and damaged now so condition in that respect isn’t a barometer for originality. The badge is from the same die as Martin Marsh one even down to the seeding pattern. That your badge has the same flat, shallow strike as seen on all the others on eBay, it’s undoubtedly not original and one of Marsh’s wares I’m afraid. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THE-ESSEX...cAAOSwo0JfxqOr https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WW1-Essex...Cclp%3A2334524 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRITISH-A...YAAOSwWelfb1Sy Keith is extremely knowledgable and a real gent but not infallible. I’ve seen large parts of his collection during our correspondence and picked out a couple duds. In this instance I’m certain his initial incline was correct. I would be very interested to see the picture and will drop him a line. Previously I have seen ‘docked’ examples of the flat top crown 1916 versions with the DET scroll removed. The outline shape would appear very similar, albeit it’s voided. That may even be what Marsh based this fake on. Luke |

EY non-voided
I don't include the non-voided EY badge on my website (though I do have many variants of it) as I regard it as unofficial. There's no evidence so far of a sealed pattern. I cover what I have discovered about it on page 66 of my book.
I have seen a photo (likely the same one that Rob refers) to and while grainy it does appear to show a non-voided badge being worn by a member of 2/1st EY. Its period of use would therefore have been very brief at best. But given that there are more examples out there on dealer sites and in particular eBay than I'd expect to see. I have seen it in metals ranging from brass to bronze and silver (allegedly silver plate). There is absolutly no legitimate reason for that last one to have been worn, and still uncertainty about the others. |

A thin year for me. I'll go with this one. Not the most attractive piece of metal around, but to a short lived unit that was just around the corner to me (way back when I was in the country!)
