Default Essex Regiment

Gents, a boot sale pic up. Can anyone pass comment on this badge re authenticity, dates etc. It has the appearance of being an officers cap badge on the rear but not really on the front.

Not wholly my skill set, so any observations welcome. Whilst I'm reasonably happy its 'right', it wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't as it cost very little indeed.

Many thanks gents

Bess

Has braze holes and sliders so not an officers. It’s an original badge that someone has relatively recently messed about with and blacked/painted for whatever reason with something that’s very glossy and clearly not resilient looking at how it’s worn off the front.

bad finish looks like old lacquer . in the past some collectors lacquered all their badges to preserve the shine over many years it goes dark brown and even black.. I bought a whole collection of badges a few years back collected by a lad in ww2 ,lacquered and stored in a loft until now. Every badge was like your one. I found that a soak in brasso and then a rinse and light brush with soap and water cleaned them up fine.

Hello Bess
I agree with Luke, your badge is an O/R badge not an officers.
All my Essex Officers badges have lugs or blades.

Thank you chaps, as suspected.

Yes it does appear to have a lacquer or something on it. Likewise I had some badges once that had been on a display board in a pub - covered in oily nicotine.

Thanks again guys, cleaning process begins.

Regards all

Bess

Admit I’ve never seen lacquer on a badge discolour to black but I don’t doubt at all what macandpud says. Normally they go a horrible opaque yellowly colour but dependent on the conditions - damp etc. I suppose it mightn’t take too much to send it black.

Either way whether it’s old lacquer or some sort of wash or paint a solvent will Remove it.

Give it a bit of a soak in nail polish remover or acetone and then a rub with a cotton bud, that won’t affect or be abrasive to the metal but will remove whatever’s on it.
