Australian Army Metal Sleeve Badges
Hello,
Would anyone know if there is a book on Australian metal sleeve badges that lists the different names and the various classes of these metal sleeve badges e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd class. I've seen these metal sleeve badges at military shows and on eBay in different coloured metals e.g. brass metal, white metal, oxidised metal, etc. I believe the attached picture is of a Royal Signals white metal badge. However, is that it's full description and what class is it, 1st, 2nd or 3rd. I thought I'd see if there is some information out there in the badge world about Australian metal sleeve badges. I would appreciate any help on this subject. Many thanks, Invest

Australian Army Metal Sleeve Badges
Here are some pictures of other metal sleeve badges that I have seen.
I wonder what other types of badges like these are out there in badge world?

i had a black and white copy of a poster of the items and they were named. i think i posted it on the forum some time back. from memory, it may have been Ironside who had it or it was his collection??
will try and find it. would most of these come in embroidered also? if so would they be in Cossums cloth book? bc found the link https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=61586 Last edited by badgecollector; 07-02-24 at 09:03 AM. |

We have had a few excellent Forum posts about the fleur-de-lis Scout sleeve badges but were they ever worn in Australia? It is quite possible but I have never seen any evidence.
I also have an early and rare brass crossed lances badge which may? have been worn in Australia. Will attach a scan when able. |

In the 1960s a Melbourne researcher named George Vazenry wrote a 170 page book on the many reorganisations of the Australian army, with hand-drawn images of uniforms and badges, which he printed on an old ink duplicator.
I think he worked for MGO branch of the army in Melbourne and had researched all the official records. He was a contemporary (and I think a fellow MGO worker) of Alfred Festburg who wrote the very first and long awaited book in 1967 on then-current Australian badges. Festburg knew everything (at least what was officially recorded) and could not be told anything, so his book is full of errors. George did the best he could and I honour his memory. I hope his pages are legible. Also attached a scan of crossed lances. It looks British to me and I have often wondered if it (and the scout fleur-de-lis) were ever worn in Australia |
