Just acquired, not a badge but a silver military prize cup, the mystery being the “C.N.M.R.“ bit. Assume Chota Nagpur Military Review but can’t find data. Anyone have a reference?

The Chota Nagpur Regiment was raised in 1891 as the Chota Nagpore Mounted Rifles and formed part of the Cavalry Reserve in the British Indian Army. It was renamed the Chota Nagpur Light Cavalry in 1910 then the Chota Nagpur Regiment in 1917. The regiment was disbanded subsequent to India's independence in 1947.

... answering my own question, maybe “Chota Nagpur Mounted Rifles” Cup makes more sense - referencing back to the unit’s origins. Anyone have conclusive info?

The C.N. Mounted Rifles were part of what became the 'Auxiliary Force India' - a militia made up of 'Europeans' [British] residents of India. The AF units, especially the cavalry and MR ones, were made up of the managerial classes: plantation owners/managers, senior civil servants and so on.

These were an important part of the social life of colonial India. They had the money and the time and inclination to organize shooting competitions, 'gymnkhanas' and other semi-military contests. Many were recognized with silver medals and badges or,as in this case, with a silver cup.

I suspect that this was given to the troop or squadron who won the 'Mounted Attack' competition every year.
